I don't watch the Oscars. Why does anyone want to watch these people preen in front of each other and then pat themselves on the back for the political statements they make when they are supposed to be thanking people? That's NOT entertainment!

I just wish the US wasn't so hung up on entertainment. It's clear to me that our society values entertainment above all else. It is Idolized to the point that people who can simply memorize lines and lose themselves to act like someone else gets paid more than people who save lives.... or do anything functionally helpful to our lives. Oh, and then there's the sports entertainers.. They work really hard to do something with no life-supporting purpose.

With all the 'real' opportunities to help each other we instead fork over tons of money to get an emotion. Are we so scared that it's easier to pay than interact? I think so. Otherwise we wouldn't have the government system we do. Democracy doesn't work when you want to be told what to do.

But anyway.. I agree the Oscars or pretty much any award situation is usually just a political maneuver and has nothing to do with merit.
