SIDESWIPE – The anti-Christian American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) may be licking its lips at the plight of Shirley Chaplin, a British nurse for the past 30 years who was recently removed from her role by Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) after she refused to stop wearing a confirmation cross around her neck at work. Highlighting their concern, four bishops and two former bishops complain in today’s Sunday Telegraph that the rights of Christians “are being treated with disrespect”. The ACLU litigates to prevent government entities in the United States from being used in any way that could conceivably be considered to be promoting Christianity, such as public buildings displaying nativity scenes at Christmas. With ObamaCare now a reality, millions of American health care professionals could find themselves subjected to anti-Christian workplace rules in the future. After forcing government-run health care upon its citizens, what is to stop it becoming another vehicle for secularism?

The danger in this case is that the issue being pursued can be easily confused. If a nurse is forbidden to wear a cross is this as a result of 1) the policy of everyone in the organization having to wear the same uniform without any personal embellishments, 2) the banning of the wearing of jewellery while on duty for hygiene or health and safety reasons, or 3) the banning of the display of any religious symbols while on duty? The outcome of this particular case will (or should) depend on the original grounds for the ban and not a confusion of all three. In addition, it would be interesting to know if the ban was a recent event or whether the nurse was told about the ban when she started employment at the particular hospital some 30 years ago. The implications of this case could be immense – especially with the diverse religions of the polyglot staff within the NHS and without whom it could not function.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens. Obamacare mainly gives power to Obama, hence everyone calling it that. He is our new messiah so only he can tell us what is right or wrong. Worshiping anyone other than Obama will eventually be illegal. Somewhere in there it will be a sin not to recycle.
I do think it’s funny that the US is up in arms about taking away freedom to choose insurance when A, it’s already been done with car insurance and B, we’ve been stripped of so many other freedoms.. For instance what real control of anything the government does an individual really have? None. There are a small no. of people running this country, both in government and industry. I really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. So, my plan is to sit back and watch it all fall apart. You win, big government!
A regional minister in Germany, Ayguel Oezkhan, said that “Christian symbols do not belong in state schools… Schools should be a neutral place.” So, it’s the same argument only with education rather than health care. Have the state take over the schools and then remove religion from the schools on the grounds that they are run by the government…
